Clinton Booed at UT/CNN Debate, Obama Came Out on Top

22 February 2008 at 9:02:00 AM

Watched the entire thing on CNN, which I had to unblock on the teevee to see (and it's going to go BACK to being blocked when I get to it today) and found it gripping. I'm going to be going down to vote this morning and it's going to be Obama; he truly spoke masterfully and well, with substantive policy answers. At the end of the debate, Clinton seemed to suggest in her closing remark that she knew she was going to lose and that she'd be okay anyway. I sure hope that's a sign to come of her gracefully bowing out rather than rapaciously going after the superdelegates. (Reminds me that Obama has an 11th win in a row to her zero wins and that was the expatriate americans overseas primary.)

I thought it was tacky she brought up the Kirk Watson/Hardball embarrassment. Kirk Watson is a state senator but guess what, he ALSO used to be mayor of Austin and he was SITTING IN THE AUDIENCE. Of course, CNN had to show him and I noticed he was sitting in the same row with Boyd Ritchie and our congressman Chet Edwards. It isn't whether I thought the Clinton campaign would be desperate enough to use it, it's that the dang man was THERE.  And again, she deliberately brought it up.

That stands in contrast to a couple of other questions where she clearly looked uncomfortable about having the questions raised by the moderators. One of those was about how the Clinton campaign accused Obama of plagiarism about his speeches. Obama pointed out that Patrick is a co-chair of his campaign and that not only had they discussed various items but Patrick had said to use them.  When she then came back and denigrated him by saying

Well, I think that if your candidacy is going to be about words, then they should be your own words. That’s I think a very simple proposition. And you know, lifting whole passages from someone else’s speeches is not change you can believe in — it’s change you can Xerox...

the audience booed and hissed at her.  She seemed very petty and small after that and actually seemed to shrink into her chair. And, um, are we really to believe that the line about xerox was one that SHE wrote instead of a speechwriter? In fact, her closing comment not only seriously echoed John Edwards but also borrowed from what her husband had said in the 1990's. First, from Wonkette about what Edwards and Bill Clinton said.

Now compare with what Hillary Clinton said last night . From TPMMuckraker

But TPM Reader CG found one example in this November 1992 article by Anna Quindlen ...

Clinton, 92: "The hits that I took in this election are nothing compared to the hits the people of this state and this country have been taking for a long time."

Hillary Clinton, tonight: "You know, the hits I’ve taken in life are nothing compared to what goes on every single day in the lives of people across our country."

Just to be 100% clear, there's nothing in the least wrong with this. And it's a great line. But I think it shows the silliness of the 'plagiarism' charges based on a few borrowed lines. Politicians borrow good lines and catch-phrases. Happens all the time. There's nothing wrong with it.

Obama, in fact, said it was *silly season*. I think it was kind of him to say so, because that's just the kind of poltiics I'm sick of. I wondered, watching, whether he was going to go down to her level and talk about that whole issue, the same way the *news* pundits do, but he didn't-he stuck to talking about issues that were raised.

Clinton at one point said something about how she had negotiated with leaders of other countries during hub's time in office. Huh? I don't remember her being Secretary of State or any other official position that would have had her in a negotiating position. It reminded me of what people disliked so much about her when she was the WIFE in the White House.

An appearance note. I was a little distracted at times by the fan that was blowing directly on Obama and kept making his notepad pages flip in the breeze. There didn't appear to be a breeze on Clinton but to Obama's credit, he didn't let it distract HIM but occasionally would hold down the pad. Clinton was wearing a weird outfit that made it look like she had a golden dental appliance around her neck. It was because she had some gold piping around the collar but it was the same color as her gold necklace and it looked a little space alien freaky or something, sort of like watching a Space Odyssey movie.
