How Far Should Protection for the Clueless Be Taken? Man Falling Off Cliff

16 February 2008 at 8:55:18 AM

I read a book some years back called "The Death of Common Sense" in which the author offered the case that you can't protect every single person from stupidity, and that there was too much of a national urge to try to make everything risk and hazard free. On the one hand, I agree about some things being made safer. For example, I remember the metal slides of my childhood and searing the underside of my leg from a boiling hot sun-baked metal slide-on the other hand, I learned, quickly, not to use a slide with no shade protection at noon.

But you simply cannot put up signs and protect the world from EVERYTHING. Like, someone could climb over the wall that protects them from the edge of the Grand Canyon. And then, that person might trip on a rock or lose his or her balance and FALL. I remember reading once about a man that stood on the edge of Hoover dam's wall to take a picture of his sweetie; sweetie turned away for a minute, looked back and the man was gone. Now, the man's common sense should have told him if there were no signs (and I don't know if there was or not) that if you climb on a wall overlooking the Hoover Dam and you SLIP, you're DEAD.

I read an article this morning about Cameron Park in Waco. A couple of people have died falling from a cliff at Circle Point and one of the families of the deceased is suing The City of Waco. In the article, a spokesman for the City of Waco says that the City is not responsible for people walking around a wall that is erected. I haven't seen the wall, so I don't know but IF it is true that there is a walking path and a wall around it to protect someone from a cliff and a person decides to walk around the wall and then falls to his or her death, should the city be responsible for that? I don't think so.

What do you think?

People's ability to act irresponsible and expect someone else to pick up the consequences is endless.  Another case in point is the family that decided to go wading in the Fort Worth Water Gardens despite the signs forbidding it.

Stupid is as Stupid does.
