Bush REALLY doesn't want the public to know about his visits with Jack Abramoff, convicted lobbyist

Last timeI wrote about this was in November, when the White House was desparately trying to keep records about Abramoff's visits to the White House (including with Bush) out of the hands of the public. Well, they still are.

Yesterday, I read that the White House coughed up SOME of the records for CREW.

Just yesterday CREW learned from another source that additional Secret Service records of at least two meetings President Bush had with Jack Abramoff have yet to be produced. So just where are these promised Secret Service records -- records, by the way, that would contradict the White House’s repeated claims that but for large social gatherings, President Bush never met with Mr. Abramoff? When pressed for an answer, a Department of Justice lawyer refused to say anything, apparently forgetting the very representations he had made months earlier to the court.

Last night, CREW filed a motion to compel the Secret Service to come forward with these long overdue missing records. Stay tuned for exactly what arguments the Secret Service offers in response, including the convenient defense, manufactured in another case CREW has against the Secret Service, that White House visitor records are no longer Secret Service agency records, but belong exclusively to the White House and are therefore beyond public reach.

So what happened today? The White House came up with, wait for it, ... the SECRECY defense.

But in a court filing Friday night, administration lawyers said that the Secret Service has identified a category of highly sensitive documents that might contain information sought in a lawsuit about Abramoff's trips to the White House.

The Justice Department, citing a Cold War-era court ruling, declared that the contents of the "Sensitive Security Records" cannot be publicly revealed even though they could show whether Abramoff made more visits to the White House than those already acknowledged.

"The simple act of doing so ... would reveal sensitive information about the methods used by the Secret Service to carry out its protective function," the Justice Department argued.

Pfffttt!

"This is an extraordinary development and it raises the specter that there were additional contacts with President Bush or other high White House officials that have yet to be disclosed," said Tom Fitton, president of Judicial Watch, a conservative watchdog group that filed the suit. "We've alleged that the government has committed misconduct in this litigation and frankly this is more fuel for that fire."

I notice the Justice Department is trying to get the same judge to see BOTH of these cases.  After all,we can't let US citizens know that a lobbyist met with Bush, now, can we?
