Gov Rick Perry's Office Tries to Charge 3000 Dollars for Email FOIA Request

1 December 2007 at 5:33:27 PM

Remember the guy who found out that, since when Bush was governor, the Texas governor\'s office has been DELETING emails after 7 days and not saving them, thus BREAKING THE LAW (plus, you know, this is where Bush got his start being sneaky).

The battle began in early November
when Washburn launched twice-weekly computer-generated requests to Perry\'s office for several days of government e-mails. Once such a request is filed, the governor\'s office cannot legally delete the e-mails.

Perry\'s office hesitated, then agreed, providing Washburn paid for the cost of what it said was staff time spent sorting through which ones could be released.

The bill came to $568 for the first four days of requested messages, and by now, Washburn estimates, totals close to $3,000.

I\'m with Washburn that Perry\'s office not only *ought* to be saving emails but are legally supposed to. When he saw the bill for what Perry tried to charge him, he complained to the AG. I mean, it ought not to be prohibitive to do FOIA requests for open government.

BTW, Bush got his start being sneaky back in high school and college when he had a friend forge his school records.  He showed promise in corruption from that time on.

When his own oil company failed his daddy's friends bought him out.  It always helps to start out rich and have rich friends.

One thing never changed.  Bush was a failure as a student, an oil businessman, a governor (although Perry surpassed him in this effort) and finally as a President.

It seems that if anyone ever wants to watch the government, make open records request, etc, they're "accused" of being liberals or Democrats.  I like that Washburn is Republican.  Politicians need more people within their own parties watching them.

Perry is protected by legislators, wealthy powerful people, including Attorney General Greg Abbott's Office.  For whatever reason, these people put themselves, their jobs and the people of Texas at great risk.  It must be very worthwhile for them.  Dedicated watchdog groups are the ones who will open up government and protect the people.
