Cow Poop Will Power 11,000 Homes -Huckabay Ridge (Erath Co)TX Microgy Plant

Have written about this before, pretty cool to turn manure into energy to power your home.

Roughly 10 times a day, a tractor-trailer loaded with almost 20 tons of cow manure rolls up an earthen ramp at the Microgy Inc. facility outside of Stephenville. The drivers drop each load into a mixing tank, starting a process that ends with the production of natural gas that could soon be used to heat your water or cook your food.

The Huckabay Ridge plant, with eight huge silos holding more than 900,000 gallons each, is the biggest feature on the gently rolling hills of Erath County, home to 52,000 dairy cows. The nation's biggest operation to convert manure to methane, the $18.5 million facility is capable of producing enough natural gas to power about 11,000 homes, said Mike Hvisdos, executive vice president of Microgy, a subsidiary of New Hampshire-based Environmental Power Corp.

The plant addresses at least two pressing problems. One is local: how to get rid of the 141 pounds of manure produced each day by the average dairy cow. The other is global: how to find new sources of energy that don't pump additional tons of carbon dioxide, an important greenhouse gas, into the atmosphere. Plus, on Monday, there wasn't a noticeable odor, even downwind.

At Huckabay Ridge, dry manure collected from nearby dairies is mixed with water, fed into a million-gallon basin and then pumped into the huge silos, called digesters. There, other waste products -- oils and fats from restaurants -- are added to boost the bacteria that break down manure into methane. The dried residue byproduct is a dark compost that is then sold to the Texas Department of Transportation.
