Pakistan's Musharaff AGAIN puts Imran Khan on House Arrest- Shades of 2006

First up, I did a podcast on Imran Khan in March of 2006, when Khan was put on house arrest for speaking up about Bush's visit to Mushareff. Khan has been an outspoken critic of the military dictatorship in Pakistan and Bush's hypocrisy for endorsing it. PODCAST FROM 2006.

I see today that Khan has AGAIN been put on house arrest as Musharaff again overthrows the government. Seems that Mushareff doesn't like dissent in his dictatorship. (Here's video of Khan speaking about it on BBC News.)

Pakistani cricketer-turned-politician Imran Khan said he had been placed under house arrest following the imposition of a state of emergency by President Pervez Musharraf.

Police sources said that around a dozen other opposition lawyers and politicians have been detained in raids in various parts of the country including the head of the Supreme Court bar association, Aitzaz Ahsan.

"Police entered my house in Lahore and told me that I am placed under house arrest, they did not show me any detention order at all," Khan said.

Khan earlier accused Musharraf of committing treason and called for him to face the death penalty.

Khan, who heads his Movement for Justice Party, is at the forefront of an opposition campaign to dislodge the military ruler who grabbed power in a coup eight years ago.

"Musharraf has been portraying himself as a benevolent dictator but now as he is pushed into a corner he is showing his true colours. He is a power-grabber and wants to cling to power at all costs," Khan said.

Tehreek-e-Insaaf President and former cricketer Imran Khan today saidthat President Pervez Musharraf has committed treason and should face the death penalty for declaring a state of emergency.

Calling on Pakistanis to resist Musharraf's move and not to recognise new Chief Justice Abdul Hameed Dogar, Khan was quoted by The News as saying "He (Musharraf) has committed high treason by negating the orders of the Supreme Court which bars him from taking any unconstitutional steps and by sending in troops after the Supreme Court decision."

"He is punishable by death. I urge every Pakistani people not to recognise this collaborator chief justice. I urge the people, lawyers, civil society to resist this move by Musharraf. I urge lawyers to boycott the court proceedings," he added.

Former premier Nawaz Sharif said the country was in the middle of a major crisis, adding that the decision to impose an emergency is unprecedented.

"In the past, the prime minister and the parliament were targets of martial law, but now the Supreme Court is the target," Sharif told Geo News on telephone from Saudi Arabia.

"The decision to impose an emergency is unprecedented. Never in history has such treatment been meted out to judges," Sharif said.

He said the offices of the president and Army Chief both have been used against the country. "Nobody would support this situation within or outside the country," he said.

A later article says that Khan has escaped from house arrest.
