PFFFTTT!! Atmos Energy *Safety* Committment in Wylie, Texas

4 November 2007 at 7:59:26 AM

Let's see. A couple in Wylie, Texas died last year when their home exploded. And the thing is that they had repeatedly called Atmos gas to complain about smelling what they suspected was a gas leak. And in case you don't remember, the gas lines out there were some crummy polyethelene pipe. But what was disgusting in April of this year was that, shortly after the Texas Railroad Commission decided to give Atmos the rate increase they wanted, they also cleared Atmos in the gas leak! (Can you say Corruption???)

This article from DFW's WFAA has a number of stories where the residents called Atmos and were blown off. .. until, as in one case, WFAA got called in and it was On the TeeVee. Recently, a man who lives in Wylie walked through their neighborhood with a gas leak detector. Oopsie, there was a bunch of them!

So why would Atmos want to low-key their appalling safety and response issues? Ah.

At the same time, however, Atmos boasts to potential investors that it has the "lowest utility operation and maintenance expenses per customer among its peers." Atmos spends $112 per customer; competitors spend $218 per customer.

A desire to keep maintenance costs low might explain why Atmos lets an estimated 100,000 potentially deadly pipeline couplings to remain in the constantly shifting North Texas soil. Replacing them could cost tens of millions of dollars.

Or maybe that equates to more money for investors, screw the customers who live there.

Two times in the past week, News 8 has responded to natural gas leaks faster than Atmos repair crews.

Pretty bad. I'm glad to see this kind of attention paid to this. I noticed in this week's Glen Rose Reporter newspaper a big ad Atmos Energy took out that shows they intend to increase their gas rates in all the cities they service. I also know that I have some towns around here DENY their gas rate. Seems to me that Atmos ought to get their act together on SAFETY first before trying to get more money for what they offer.. even if the Texas Railroad Commission is all hugged up with them.
