What about the Nuclear WASTE? Scientists Tell Bush To Dump His Nuclear Waste Plan

Amidst all the rosy scenarios for nuclear energy that PR firms are churning out daily, the issue of what happens to nuclear waste remains. Do we store it at each site? (Comanche Peak does that now). Or do we ship it around the country to a place like Yucca Mountain? (But then you have the NIMBY arguments). Bush has used a GNEP plan that would recycle nuclear waste as the heart of his argument to push nuclear energy. The problem is that the plan is faulty because a. the reprocessing technology hasn't been proven and b. even if it somehow DID work, it wouldn't be ready when the Bush administration wants it to be.

A panel of the National Academy of Sciences urged President George W. Bush on Monday to abandon a plan to resume nuclear waste reprocessing that is the heart of the administration's push to expand civilian use of nuclear power.

The 17-member panel said the proposed Global Nuclear Energy Partnership, or GNEP, hasn't been adequately reviewed and is banking on reprocessing technology that hasn't been proved, or isn't expected to be ready in the time the administration envisions.

It said if the administration proceeds as planned there will be "significant technical and financial risks."

Bush announced the initiative in 2006 and has touted it as key to U.S. efforts to deal with a growing amount of highly radioactive reactor waste and still allow a large expansion of commercial nuclear power.

The plan envisions a few nations, including the United States and Russia, supplying others with reactor fuel and reprocessing their used fuel.

When did any SCIENCE truth stop C-student Bush? I'll be glad for the time when we get a person in office that actually is thoughtful... and gee, maybe even did well in school!
