Older article in the Dallas Morning News extolls the delights of Fossil Rim's Sunset Safari tour. Good article.
| What it is: Glen Rose's Fossil Rim Wildlife Center boasts 1,800 acres dotted with endangered and threatened animals, most of which are on display for a face-to-face meet-and-greet during the facility's drive-through self-guided tours. | But few wildlife lovers get a chance to see the critters in an after-dark environment, which is what makes the park's Sunset Safari such a treatWhat it's all about: Several times a year, Fossil Rim presents an evening event that begins with a multicourse dinner in the Safari Camp Pavilion, an off-the-beaten-path glass-walled building with views of one of the park's most popular watering holes. After the meal, diners pile into open-air vans for a guided tour of the grounds. Even if you've seen it all before during the standard 10-mile self-drive, the grounds and the animals look distinctly different when the sun goes down — and it's much easier to imagine yourself touring the African savannah when your vehicle isn't surrounded by a half-dozen other Toyotas jockeying for the best vantage point from which to feed the giraffes. By the time the tour is finished, the long drive back to Dallas or Fort Worth will seem none too appealing, so we recommend planning ahead for an overnight stay right on the park grounds. Those looking for "rustic luxury" can bunk at the Lodge, a five-room bed and breakfast with rates ranging from $150 per night (for a room with a shared bath) to $300 (for a secluded room with a king-size bed, fireplace and private bath with Jacuzzi and separate shower). Happy campers can opt for the canvas-sided "tent cabins" of the Safari Camp (not surprisingly, located adjacent to the Safari Camp Pavilion). Though $200 a night may seem a little pricy for the tiny, austere accommodations (two twins beds take up almost all of the available floor space), the air-conditioned cabins are clean and comfortable, each boasts a full bath with shower — and the bucolic location can't be beat. I've stayed in some pretty posh hotels in my day, but I've never woken at dawn to find a herd of Arabian oryx and greater sandhill cranes milling around in front of the Four Seasons.
