Republicans Weak on the 4th Amendment and Breaking the Law- Scuttle Surveillance Bill Yesterday

18 October 2007 at 9:02:31 AM

You just have to ask what the fool wimpy Republicans are AFRAID of? They sure seem to be the most fearful scaredy-cats we have in office. Or maybe it's just the particular pack of elected ones. In any event, I came back from some stuff I was doing yesterday to watch the House floor proceedings (recorded) which I assumed would be full of lively debate and conversation about what was in the bill that would repeal that awful travesty the House rushed to pass before their vacay... and instead saw that the House was talking about some railroad administration bill. Turns out that Republicans were planning a procedural maneuver that would include some language that was ALREADY in the bill but would have forced the bill off the floor back into committee-so instead, the Democrats to pulled it. What was the language?

The amendment would have said that nothing in the bill could limit surveillance of Osama bin Laden and terrorist organizations. While Democrats say their bill already provides that authority, voting against the amendment could make it seem as though a member of Congress were against spying on Al Qaeda.

Why'd Republicans do that? Because they WANT Bush to be able to get blanket warrants, and spy on Americans, too! And they want the telecom companies to be free from prosecution, even though they were breaking the law.. and knew it.

To tell you the truth, since that horrible August bill is going to expire anyway soon, and then we would GO BACK TO the OLD FISA BILL, if the Dem bill, which includes blanket warrants for everybody doesn't get passed, and we have to have one that, gasp, honors the 4th amendment, fine with me! Maybe by then the Democrats at least will decide that honoring the Constitution is the way to go.

I really don't understand, and have not, why Republicans would want to be on the side of supporting lawbreakers (the telecom companies) that helped Bush break the law. Kind of mind-boggling-shouldn't EVERYONE in Congress be for upholding the law, and if you don't like the law the way it is AND YOUR CONSTITUENTS WANT A CHANGE, you change it but you don't let all the people who were breaking it before off the hook.
