Why 911 changed nothing

Have you heard someone say that '911 changed everything'? The president keeps saying it but is it really true? According to recently found information, we now know that President Bush was asking Qwest (did Verizon & AT&T comply?) to allow them to wiretap Americans illegaly six months prior to 911. So what has really changed? Cheney and Bush had it on their agenda from day 1 to get into Iraq according to the ex-terror czar that was in the office at the time.

The only thing that changed on 911 is the fear level of Americans...which is allowing this trampling of the Constitution. Once they have you scared then they can get away with anything because we refuse to question when we are scared but the time is here to ask some hard questions.
Why are we in Iraq?
Why are we in Afghanistan?
Why aren't we in Saudi Arabia where the actual attackers that crashed planes into our buildings came from?
Why do we think we have to 'spread freedom'?
Why don't we see our dead soldiers on TV?
Why does Cheney still insist Iraq had something to do with 911?
Why do the Iraqi's have to come to an oil and natural gas lease agreement before we leave?
Why aren't our soldiers here at home to DEFEND us instead of in Iraq?

Usually I agree fully with you, Joe, and your heart is in the right place --- so to speak.

However, I believe 911 changed many, if not most things.  Here are a few:

  • 911 enabled special interest corporations and individuals to make greater profits under the rubric and within the framework of American "patriotism"
  • It made traveling more complicated for most Americans and helped to eliminate smaller airlines or helped the consolidation/merger of some
  • It enabled our government to monitor the activities of Americans more closely than ever before and give omnipotent power to the president and government at the national and state levels
  • Since 911, the majority of Americans have become poorer and the middle class continues to disintegrate
  • Since 911 our national budget has soared dramically as have over-expenditures --- we are way "in the red"
  • Home foreclosures have increased dramatically since 911 due to the easy credit available after 911
  • Laws were changed to benefit corporations and collection agencies in going after those in debt, along with stricter guidelines for filing bankruptcy
  • Higher education became more unaffordable for most Americans
  • As trillions were being spent overseas our own needs and priorities were placed on hold
  • Despite tighter security measures, illegal immigration continued to increase
  • Despite the majority of public opinion, a lame-duck president continues to do as he pleases without retribution, including increasing tax dollars to continue the "effort" in Iraq
  • Health care has become more unaffordable since 911
  • As you point out, many of our constitutional rights and freedoms continue to be violated
  • Americans have become more hated by world nations since 911.

All in all, I'd have to say that the U.S., as we know it, has changed dramatically since 911 --- unfortunately, most of it has been negative for the majority of Americans.

Just my 2 cents.
