Congressional Resolutions on Genocide-Better to Have Private Historians Call Out Countries?

13 October 2007 at 4:43:08 PM

I was just out in the truck listening to NPR and, on BBC World News, a couple of historians made what I thought were some interesting points about whether it is appropriate for countries that have no direct involvement in genocide in other countries to pass resolutions condemning same. One man said that countries basically should MYOB, and look at their own foibles and failures before condemning other countries. Along with that, it then becomes extremely important that private historians take on that job and not act as bully pulpit stenographers for government propaganda. For example, the man said that it is against the law in Turkey to discuss the Armenian deaths as genocide.

That said, the US Congress seems to be Mr. and Mrs. Nosy Parkers and constantly passing resolutions about what goes on in other countries. Both Democrats and Republicans do it. So, while I tend to agree with the BBC commentator, as long as ANYONE does it in Congress, and until/unless the US gets some sense and quits acting like the Kings and Queens of the World, calling out genocide where it exists (or existed) is a matter of free speech, whether Bush likes it or not.

P.S. It's ironic, isn't it, that the Bush administration just called out the genocide taking place in Burma... but it upset about Turkey being called out for their genocide. That would be the Politically Expedient Genocide Answer, right?
