John Cornyn-Against Free Speech and the First Amendment-The Free Speech Muzzling

4 October 2007 at 12:33:49 PM

I do not agree with those who want to muzzle free speech when they don't agree with what the opposing side (or sides) are saying, and especially not Congress trying to do it. That's one reason why Rick Noriega is so unappealing to me; he is the other side of John "BushBot" Cornyn who also would stop those whose ideas ore presentation he doesn't like. The answer to bad speech is MORE speech, not less of it or trying to completely stop those who don't agree with us. I don't watch crap (well, not right-winger crap, anyway-heh); thankfully, I'm not strapped, Clockwork Orange style into a chair and forced to watch, say, Rush Limbaugh. I have never, ever, even once, watched Bill O'Reilly's show. But I defend his right to be on the air saying whatever he wants because then his arguments (or lack of them) get aired, where people can see them, hear them, think about them, and accept or reject them. The issue of corporate media ownership of course plays into this, but partisan media has ever been so in the history of this country. USNews has a good article about this.

It's almost comical to watch both political parties, but especially the Republicans, act selectively about the First Amendment. We still have one.

The GOP members of Congress went berserk over a full-page ad in the New York Times mocking Gen. David Petraeus and questioning his integrity. The ad was over the top and wrongheaded. However, the group had a right to say it.

A resolution condemning the ad passed in the Senate with many frightened Democrats going along with the Republicans. The chief sponsor was GOP Sen. John Cornyn of Texas, a reactionary who would follow President Bush over a cliff, no questions asked.

The Texan is up for re-election next year. Every voter there who still considers the First Amendment a legitimate right should examine his record.
