Fence Won't Protect Texas- But Guess What! We're Taking Your Land and Building it ANYWAY!

3 October 2007 at 10:02:20 AM

Imagine that, on YOUR block, the city council came over and said that, worried about crime from the next town over, they decided that YOUR property was the very place to build a big ole fence to keep out the others. You said, hey, but I have this beautiful pond here, and my flower garden and my shed, and they said, tough. You reassure yourself, begrudgingly, that if you have no choice in the matter, at least it will be a secure fence that will do what it's supposed to do. But then you find out that not only is it not built to the specifications they said they were going to (so where'd all that money go?) but then they tell you it's not going to really keep out the other people anyway. You say, well, THAT's good news, now that you know that, you can leave my dang land alone! They say, No. Even though we know the fence is useless, we're going to build it anyway. Tough. Why? Because the city people don't have enough clout to stop it.

The first public forum of a new state border security group Monday turned into a one-sided referendum on the federal government’s planned border fence, with local and state officials agreeing the structure will do little to stop illegal immigration.

But the Border Security Council told frustrated local officials that they were virtually helpless to stop the federal project to build hundreds of miles of fence along the U.S.-Mexico border. Congress has budgeted $1.2 million for the fences.

Instead, state officials said they wanted to secure the border by stopping drug and human trafficking and terror-related activities.

‘‘The idea of fences is to keep terrorists from our country. I say that fences do not make arrests,’’ McAllen Police Chief Victor Rodriguez told the eight of the eleven members of the council who attended the meeting, the first of three this week in border cities.

Rodriguez said the money being spent on the new fence should instead pay for more Border Patrol agents.

But state officials said that wasn’t their department.

But at least it's pretty! That excuses the whole racism of the fence now, doesn't it?

Since a blueprint of the fence construction was leaked earlier this year, local officials in the Rio Grande Valley, the most populated part of the Texas-Mexico border, have been angry about the prospects and are planning an organized opposition.

In addition to hurting diplomatic relations with Mexico and damaging the cross-border economy, it could also damage ecosystems and cut wildlife off from the only source of fresh water in the region.

But earlier Monday, Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff told The Associated Press that the fence would actually be better for the environment because illegal immigrants degrade areas along the border with waste and garbage (see Page A8).

Please. How pathetic is this? The *purpose* for the fence, questionable, arrogant, and racist as it is, isn't even what's happening, but the fence is going to be built anyway because it's good for TRASH???????????????????? How'd you like YOUR land being taken for that?

I wonder. If we can get some more Democrats in power in this next election, will they STOP building the fence? What a waste of money, particularly when Bushies and his cronies WANT undocumented workers in this country for the slave low-wage jobs.
