Democrats Still Weak and Useless!

While both houses of the U.S. Congress have slight Democrat majorities, they are not sufficient to change the Bush administration's foreign and domestic policies --- even if the Democratic Party wanted to make any changes.

Without a 2/3 majority, Bush may still veto any bill or resolution without any retribution.  Hence, the Democratics can NOT override successfully ANY Bush veto.

In other words, without such a majority and a real commitment from the Democratic Party, American citizens will remain deep within the muck and corruption of the current administration's haphazard direction for many years to come and our grandchildren will continue to pay the bulk for our poor judgment.

1 - salon   3 Oct 2007 @ 9:45:27 AM  I've been thinking along those lines this morning. I don't think it's the Democrats in general that are *weak and useless*, but rather the leadership that isn't doing its job. I've been watching Democrats in general on the House floor for a few years and there are some real firebrands who DO stand up for what's important. But it seems to me that Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid have short-circuited bargaining tools that ought to be used... by the MAJORITY. The biggest example is Pelosi saying that impeachment was off the table-now why wouldn't a sensible MAJORITY hold back that as a potential tool, at the very least.

2 - pstern   3 Oct 2007 @ 10:36:44 PM  It's not that I'm stating that all individual Democrats are weak.  What the article I wrote points out is that the party is weak and useless because they lack the 2/3 majority of both houses.  I do agree with you about the lack of Democratic leadership; however, even if the Dems had strong leaders that would "step-up to the plate" when needed, the point is that whatever the Dems do won't get done because they lack the REAL power --- that of overriding a Bush veto.

3 - salon   4 Oct 2007 @ 10:29:58 AM  That's where we differ. I want to see a fight, even if ultimately Bush overrides the veto-MAKE the issues public, MAKE the opposition have to filibuster, RAISE awareness of just what is going on. Sort of the David vs Goliath narrative. That's what's missing, to me. I'd rather see an Alamo situation than one in which the polits at the top are considering the polls, their re-eletion campaigns, where the pork and jobs are in the district.

4 - pstern   5 Oct 2007 @ 3:29:58 PM  We don't differ!  I always want to see a fight, especially when it's the right thing to do.  I agree with you, but I don't see that happening because --- again --- the so-called "leaders" and most of the Democrats are weak.  The GOP are no better, except that Bush still --- as a "lame duck" --- is in a powerful place and will milk those inherent Democratic Party weaknesses.
