Militarism Events for 9/11- High School Assembly (Hill County) and *Freedom Walk* in Corsicana, Texas

Remember in 2005 when it came out that the Department of Defense was sponsoring a "Freedom Walk" that was actually a political event? It was designed not only to do remembrances for the tragedy on 9/11 but tie 9/11 to the Iraq War. Originally the Washington Post was to be one of its sponsors, but pulled out after they saw what the Bush administration was attempting.

It is perfectly appropriate for the Defense Department to organize a memorial for Americans who died on Sept. 11, since many were Pentagon employees. It is also fine to pay tribute to the sacrifices being made by the troops in Iraq. What is disturbing is the Bush administration's insistence on combining the two in a politically loaded day of marching and entertainment.

Having failed to find weapons of mass destruction in Iraq, the administration has been eager to repackage the war as a response to Sept. 11. The Freedom Walk appears to be devised to impress this false connection on the popular imagination.

Even Bush has, on at least four occasions said that there was no connection between the events of September 11 and the War in Iraq. So why does the Pentagon (Department of Defense) continue to try to foist this fallacy on the public? Video compile of 4 times Bush has said this.

Well, I see the Pentagon continues to have this event and what's disturbing is that schools are involved. At least one school is having an assembly (surely not mandatory to attend, eh?) where military people will be there. It's like inviting in military recruiters and preying on their memories when most vulnerable and wrought up.

The students at Blooming Grove High School will have an assembly, organized by the senior class. Clif Sikes, government, economics and world history teacher, gave the students the idea, but allowed them to “run with it” on their own, in order to teach them leadership and responsibility.

The students made posters with the names of the victims displayed, and these will be displayed in the assembly.

“The assembly will open with ‘Remember When’ by Alan Jackson, and Staff Sgt. White of the Marines and Sgt. Tassin from the Army will speak to the students,” said Carolyn Northern of the superintendent’s office. “They will also play ‘Taps.’”

I have no idea if the two military personnel are recruiters. But, in case they are:

Lest one think that the events planned here are SOLELY about Sept 11th, read on.

Donna Riddle, organizer and second grade teacher in Hubbard Independent School District, found out about Freedom Walk from her principal. “The America Supports You Freedom Walk” was started in 2005, and will occur Sunday in Washington, D.C., from the Pentagon to the Washington Monument.

Hubbard’s version of the Freedom Walk will have the elementary students walk the half-mile from their campus, and the junior high and high school students walking from their campus to meet at the Vietnam War helicopter, which sits near the antique mall in downtown Hubbard.

“We will honor those who lost their lives at the World Trade Center, the Pentagon and those who are currently serving in the Armed Forces, as well as our veterans,” Riddle said. “Hubbard businesses donated funds, and we ordered 567 T-shirts for the kids to wear ... We will meet at 9:45 a.m. Tuesday for a short program (at the helicopter) then walk back to the campuses.”

Kids will have leadership roles in the ceremony, with some singing “The Star-Spangled Banner,” some leading the Pledge of Allegiance, and two who have signed up to serve the country upon graduation in the Air Force and Marines will be honored. Paul Morris, a local Desert Storm veteran, will be introduced by his children, and is the guest speaker. Jakob Stewart from Congressman Chet Edwards’ office will present a flag to the community that has flown over the capitol.

I am absolutely not against honoring the troops. But it is wrong to conflate Sept 11 with the War in Iraq. At the very least, there ought to be some counter-balancing information given out about this.

P.S. If we are commemorating days of terrorism, why aren't schools also holding days to remember the Oklahoma City bombings? That also was a terrorist attack that killed many, many people.
