Austin Statesman Plays Into the Hands of Pro-Tollers

It Ain't Over Until the Taxpayers Sing!

An August 29th article in the Statesman attempts to simplify the choice between opting for toll roads and getting roadways built sooner, or sitting and waiting in traffic over the next several years.  The editors conclude that "Actually, it's not much choice at all."  WRONG!!!

Our independence from England and the development of our constitution were determined primarily due to over-taxation without representation and the same thing is happening here in Texas.

For the past 5 years Texans have verbalized that they don't want toll roads; however, that outcry has been "swept under the rug" by the governor, legislators and the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) in a united effort to privatize toll roads throughout the state.  Furthermore, state officials have been resolute in their determination NOT to increase gasoline taxes of which 40 percent goes to other interests, e.g., education and general issues.  Taxpayers must demand that gasoline taxes be collected ONLY for the building and maintenance of roadways, as it was created for.  Legislators must stop diverting gas tax revenue to other interests.

Fact:  Pro-toll entities have purchased the best state government money can buy via their campaign contributions.  These "high-rollers" apparently dictate government policies and future state objectives and missions.

Despite Gov. Perry's platform of "No New Taxes" toll roads are an infinite taxation upon the residents of Texas.  In addition. unlike most forms of taxation, private toll concerns and TxDOT may increase toll taxes at any time WITHOUT prior approval from the legislature or voting taxpayers.  That just doesn't sound like representative democracy, does it?

Toll roads are NOT cost-effective with up to 80-percent of the revenue collected going to the private company operating and managing the toll roads and plazas.

The state enters long-term contracts with private toll firms for up to 80 years.  In addition, tolls are an infinite taxation, which becomes a legacy we leave to our children's grandchildren.

If more news media agree with the Statesman's editors, that the only option for building and maintaining roadways is via infinite toll taxation, it will make the pro-toll resolve that much easier to implement.

In truth, it is the people who determine future transportation policy and NOT special interest profiteers.
