What's Up With Toll Roads? ---- Really!

28 August 2007 at 7:50:55 PM

To Legislators, CAMPO and the Transportation Policy Board:

For the past 5 years the majority of Texans have vocalized their discontent with toll road plans being pushed by Gov. Perry, Rep. Mike Krusee, CAMPO and TxDOT.  In fact, legislation was passed to prohibit new toll road plans from materialize; however, TxDOT continues to be the "bad boy" state agency by now pushing for more toll roads, e.g., the latest SH 45 and the ongoing Hwy 290 / Hwy 71 roadways.
Furthermore, in his last reelection Mike Krusee won by a scant majority and may lose in his next attempt.
There must be a reason for these occurrences, that perhaps Texans REALLY don't want more toll roads throughout Texas?
Toll roads may first appear to increase revenue for road building and maintenance; however, tolls are NOT cost-effective when 80-percent off the top goes back to the company managing the toll projects and plazas.  Also, contracts with private companies generally range from 50 to 79 years, which means that toll taxes will continued to be paid by our children's grandchildren.
