Bush's Continuing Lack of Judgement Over Bolton

Bush continues to push Bolton to be ambassador of the UN, even though

  • * Angrily chased Melody Townsel, a Dallas businesswoman, through hallways in a Moscow hotel 10 years ago in a dispute over a government contract.
  • * Sought the removal of intelligence analyst Christian P. Westermann when he refused to endorse a speech Bolton was preparing on Cuba's weapons capability.
  • * Threatened to fire several underlings who crossed him.
  • * Asked a U.S. spy agency for details of secretly recorded communications of 10 U.S. officials.

When we think of what an ambassador's personality traits are, hothead, pushy, and demanding don't spring to mind, but rather conciliatory, working to promote consensus and agreement. We also know that Bolton has promoted the idea of dismantling the UN, totally inappropriate for one who would be ambassador.. of the UN. Bush has said that Bolton was confirmed before for other appointment jobs, but this argument is specious. Bolton might have been fit for other jobs but still be entirely ill-suited to be ambassador. Consider in your own life-you might apply in the company for the job of accountant, and get it, but not get the job as marketing specialist.

The administration is portraying Bolton's style as exactly what's needed to whip troubled world body into shape.
"A vote against him is a vote for the status quo at the United Nations," said White House press secretary Scott McClellan.

No, that's not correct. A vote against Bolton is a vote for manners, decency and the art of ambassadorship. Bush is not doing his own lagging popularity any favors by promoting this man.
