Gas Well Drilling Coming to Dallas County-Grand Prairie Sets Limits On How Close the Wells Can Be

I noticed this Dallas Morning News article says "Don't Say You Weren't Warned", which was a theme in another article recently as well. Isn't that human nature, though, not to pay attention to some events that are going to undeniably alter their lives, until whatever it is shows up on their street in front of the house?

After years of drilling for natural gas in the massive Barnett Shale underneath North Texas, gas companies are starting to set up shop on the western fringes of Dallas County.

Wells are in the works on the Dallas County portions of Grand Prairie and Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport. Permits have been approved for wells in western Dallas. Coppell has received a proposal to drill a well. Irving expects to get applications soon.

Like their counterparts to the west, Dallas County cities and school districts have been preparing for the gas rush. Some have been leasing mineral rights beneath their land and benefiting from hundreds of thousands – even millions – of dollars in bonus payments and expected royalties. Others have been drafting or passing ordinances to protect residents.

Many have thought that Dallas County wouldn't yield any natural gas. But observers say it's worth a shot to see how far the Barnett Shale reaches into Dallas County. Some speculate that the shale extends to about Loop 12 on the county's west side.

And Grand Prairie is restricting wells located less than 1000 feet from homes.
