Chet Edwards (US House Dist 17) Met With Some Residents This Morning at Big Cup Cafe Restaurant

24 August 2007 at 11:58:34 AM

A few notes from the meeting. There were roughly 15-20 people in attendance, to include a few of the county commissioners (Mike Ford, James Barnard, and Lloyd Wirt) and Judge Maynard. Also Larry Smith, Ron Hankins and wife Cathy, Gary Marks, and a few people I needed to get introductions to!

Water and road issues were brought up. Although the regulation of oil and gas and usage of water actually falls directly, in the state of Texas, to the Texas Railroad Commission, Edwards said he would like to know about any issues involving reluctant O&G. I remember earlier this year he passed a bill which would encourage O&G to recycle water through outfits like Fountain Quail.

Glen Rose Medical Center-Edwards discussed that the earmark for the GRMC had passed the House but not the Senate and advised people to call up Cornyn and Hutchison to ask that it be included in the Senate version of the bill.

Chips. Naturally Edwards voted for Chips (Children's Health Insurance)-he's always been a proponent of this and that's one big reason he beat out Arlene Wolgemuth in a previous election.

Earmarks. Edwards said that most people were concerned about the money being put out for various projects. I commented that, in my opinion, a lot of people are concerned about the secrecy of the earmarks and how they're put into a bill in a rush before lawmakers can know about them, that I would like it if earmarks could be viewed for at least a week BY THE PUBLIC before voted on, so that if there were questionable ones, the taxpayers could let the rep know opinions. I also asked him about his comments to the Waco paper about not letting people know all the earmarks he is asking for. His point was that people might be confused by a *wish list* and think that every request was going to happen. But he did say after reflection, he was coming down on the side of letting people know all the wish list items, with clear instrucs that these weren't necessarily going to be approved.

Health Care. Edwards talked about medicare as well and some stats on the number of uninsured in this country. Mike Ford made some interesting comments about how we lack an overall strategy for healthcare.

Nuclear Power and the energy bill. Edwards, as we know is for nuclear power, and said one reason is that it doesn't cause global warming. However, he is also on the Yucca Mountain committee and believes that there should be a small number of nuclear waste repositories rather than each nuclear site storing its own waste, due to terrorism concerns. Edwards asked how people in Somervell County feel about the additional nuclear power plant that is going to be built here, whether, for example, a poll has been taken. (I think that since there wasn't a town hall meeting, it would be pretty tough for people to know and weigh in to him about this.)

Town Hall Meeting vs Small Unadvertised Meetings. I mentioned on a different blog entry that, after I read in the Cleburne paper that Edwards was there and had held a town hall meeting, that I called up Edward's Cleburne office to ask if he was coming to Glen Rose. Victoria Sykes, who is the new field representative for Chet Edwards, told me that there was nothing on the schedule for him coming to Glen Rose. I asked if he had plans to hold a town hall meeting in Somervell County and she told me that he would be in Granbury at 1:00 pm. That same day, while I was at the courthouse, Judge Maynard's office told me that Edwards WAS coming to Glen Rose, that he would be at the Big Cup Eatery in the morning and then afterwards tour the Glen Rose Medical Center; AND that it was open to the public. When I saw Ms Sykes at the breakfast, she said the reason she had not told me about the meeting was that it was intended to be a small gathering. (So she DID know about it, she opted for some reason not to tell me). My question is, why? Edwards is our United States representative, and, while it's nice that he can meet with some of the town politicos, who WERE told about this, what about the citizens who live in this county that would like their opportunity to not only hear him speak but voice their questions and opinions? I did bring this up, and when I did, Edwards said in the future he would have a town hall meeting, perhaps both a small meeting as well as a town hall, and attempt to hold it at a time when most citizens can attend.  I have to assume that the small meeting would continue to be open to the public, as long as people hear about it.

Lloyd Wirt (D-Precinct 3 and 6) told us something that warmed our heart. Earlier this year, the Somervell County Commissioners Court passed a resolution against any more commercial waste injection wells in Somervell County.. and that should O&G attempt to put in another one, the Court will automatically lodge a protest against it. That wasn't the best, though. Apparently there was a waste injection well that needed to be re-certified and the O&G was told by the Railroad Commission that they had to go before the court and ask for an okay. That totally rocks! Can I just say that I think our commisioners are the best. I don't attend every meeting but the ones I have been to are always interesting and the commissioners are involved.

I would expect the head of the Democratic party in the county to be the first one notified/invited to any meetings with our Congressman.  There should be nothing but truth coming from the congressman's office.

I was very sorry to learn Edwards voted for the wiretapping bill and sure hope he does not vote to renew it. I will communicate that directly to him.

Kudos to our commissioners for action on the disposal wells.

I was surprised at that, too. Even more than that, I think there should have been a town hall meeting for Somervell County. Hood County and Johnson County had one, and the Hood County meeting was very well attended, so have to assume people were notified in advance about it. One doesn't want to feel that Somervell County is the red-headed stepchild of the district.

He waffled on whether he will vote for it again when the renewal time comes up. I'll be spending the next day or so chunking video from his town hall meeting so you can see it (and have audio of the whole thing so you can hear) but basically he didn't say he would vote with the Democrats to gut that shameful measure. In fact, he said if he had a choice, he'd err on the side of security INSTEAD OF THE CONSTITUTION. That, franky, doesn't set right with me, but I'm going to comment on it, and I hope you will too when I put that bit up on here.

And yes, our county commissioners and judge ROCK! You know, Tarrant County only has ONE disposal well. ONE. We have... FIVE.
