Latest Tax Grab Scam in Hays County!

21 August 2007 at 3:57:44 PM

If this is successful, other counties will try to abuse taxpayers in the same manner.

Hays County Commissioners Looking to Triple-Tax Homeowners

"The more things change, the more they stay the same."

Despite already being slammed recently with a yearly property tax appraisal value increase and an approved county 1-cent tax rate increase,  which calculates into a "tax rate of 46 cents per $100 of property valuation, representing a one penny increase from the FY06-07 rate" the commissioners aren't finished abusing taxpayers yet.  Currently, they are looking to approve a road bond package similar to the one that was voted-down in the last election.
Exactly what don't commissioners comprehend when taxpayers say "No!" to road bond issues?
Despite what residents are being told, the tax rate increase isn't needed either.
Commissioners still are using an antiquated taxpayers to cost of services ratio that doesn't take into account the huge numbers of new homeowners moving into the county who are adding to the county tax revenue.  We're told that the increasing numbers of new homeowners paying taxes does NOT cover the increasing costs of providing county services.
In truth, it's hard to imagine that the combination of sky-rocketing yearly home values and increased tax rate won't pad county tax revenue more than actually is needed.  At best it's an overcompensation of the need for tax revenue.
After the past 6 years of ongoing property tax increases, even with the 33-percent cut in property taxes provided by the legislature last year, which has yet to come into effect, homeowners continue to be overburdened by property taxes that have increased during that period of time by as much as 500 percent in total for some homeowners.
It's also interesting to note that commissioners went ahead with the tax rate increase despite the ongoing escalation of home foreclosures, which is a record high for the county and throughout the state.
The decision to increase the tax rate shows a lack of reality and waning sensitivity to the plight of county homeowners and apparently underscores the long-term thought process that maybe Democrats really do like to raise taxes.
The additional proposed tax hike in the way of approving a road bond package will be devastating to residential property owners who already are having a difficult time hanging-on to their home as taxes continue to sky-rocket.  The winners are pro-developers, who stand to make a "killing" from huge profits.  Unfortunately, many average homeowners will be "killed" as well in the process.
Once again the REAL losers continue to be those homeowners who live on fixed income, e.g., seniors and the disabled.  Officials surely will attempt to point out that this population already has been provided additional and/or increased exemptions; however, in reality, those exemptions won't mean very much as values and taxes continue to climb.
If the bond package is approved, it will amount to the finalization of triple-taxing homeowners within a 1-year period.
One pending result is crystal clear.  You can "bet the farm" that home foreclosures will continue to escalate dramatically as more people recognize first-hand that the "great American dream" of owning their home turns into a tragic nightmare.
