Chet Edwards' Fancy Shmancy Glossy Brochure Mailout-At My Expense

I used to put out a newsletter that was 12 pages (well, 6 front and back). Along with stapling it to keep it closed, the weight of it allowed me to send each one for..... the price of a first class stamp. Which, at the time was, if I recall, about 37 cents. The newsletter was black and white, had scanned photos and would have probably cost the same to mail if it had been printed with color. Because it was printed on light paper stock, each newsletter cost roughly 90 cents. One time the copier did the newsletter on thicker paper which treated colors better and it actually cost me 60 cents to mail it that time. My point is that I got out a lot of information in a newsletter for a pretty low price. Had I been sending that newsletter all within the same area, I could have gone for bulk rate pricing and done it even more cheaply.

So, I got this slick tri-fold 11x17 brochure from Chet Edwards office, entitled "Honoring Our Promises to America's Veterans", with a pic of Edwards passing out purple hearts, etc on the front. Nowhere on the brochure does it say that he's a Democrat. Frankly, it looks like a campaign mailer that is capitalizing on his veterans hospital etc activity. I've said before on several occaions and I'll say it again, that I think it's absolutely terrific that veterans have someone like Chet Edwards to fight for them, because it's for darn sure Bush isn't. But Edwards is the same man that has worked against getting the troops home and done some behind the scenes activity to weaken Democrat bills.... because he says he doesn't want to tie Bush's hands. Well, he is helping to CREATE Veterans by not bringing Bush's Iraq debacle to an end, quickly.

But my point here is that the brochure says "This mailing was prepared, published and mailed at taxpayer expense". Why am I paying for this? He couldn't have done this more cheaply? If it was for the purpose of impressing people rather than getting out information, because of an upcoming election, then he ought to pay for it himself.

I called up Kinkos to ask them what the price might be (and of course this is not precise) on this type of mailing, sans postage, and they said they would charge about 4 dollars per.

I'm not quibbling, you understand, about Edwards wanting to tell the veterans what he has done for them, although I haven't seen him trumpeting the fact that he voted for Bush's surveillance-without-warrants bill. But I think, responsibly, he ought to do it more cheaply, with the emphasis on information instead of glossy campaign futures.
