What really is the purpose of running a jail? Or deciding to turn over the running of it to a private corporation? Is it so that the county can save money? That might be, but a private, for-profit corporation isn't accountable to the public and THEIR concern is whether they can make money running it.
Saw an article in the Weatherford paper that the county commissioners want CiviGenics to come up with a performance bond before they okay their running the jail in Parker County. Reason is that if Civigenics ever goes bankrupt and quits managing the jail, who pays? The taxpayers in the county.
But this is the part that interested me most.
Precinct 4 Commissioner Jim Webster was interested in the CiviGenics business model. He asked Argeropulos for copies of the company’s pro forma financial sheets and profit margins. Argeropulos said the method his company uses to determine whether or not a contract will be profitable is an internal process.
“Your concern is whether it will be profitable. My concern is whether it will save the county money,” Webster responded.
Argeropulos pointed out that CiviGenics is a privately-held company and suggested such information is considered confidential.
Where's the oversight when you go to a privitization system?
Incidentally, someone wrote a letter to the editor about the privatization scam. Who wants it? Privitazation pimps.
Statewide, the privatization pimps in our State legislature have pulled such outsourcing boondoggles as the Trans Texas Corridor and the toll road schemes.
Now, Parker County commissioners want to outsource our jails. I can only conclude their research on CiviGenics was totally lacking. Type “CiviGenics lawsuit” in a search engine and educate yourself to the corruption, scandals and abuse involving CiviGenics in particular and “private prisons” in general.
We need sworn PEACE OFFICERS performing these and other related duties, not hired guns and less accountability.
