Texas Campaign Ethics Bill is Dead in the Water

29 April 2005 at 1:08:31 AM

Doesn't say much for the Texas House, but speaks volumes about some concern for Craddick's safety.

Last background post

Proponents of the bill tried to get it to the floor for a vote without committee approval (recall that Denney wasn't eager to get it out of committee). The bill would have restricted use of corporate and union money in political campaigns, but many Republicans thought it was a shot at Tom Craddick, whose 2002 campaign finance records have been subpoenaed by Ronnie Earle. Craddick naturally said the bill wasn't aimed at him, but then, he didn't support it either.

Rep. Tommy Merritt last year lost a state senatorial race to an opponent who used last-minute anonymous attack ads that would be banned under the bill. He asked Craddick to allow the vote to bring the bill to the floor.

Merritt, R-Longview, said Keel told him his political career would be over if he didn't withdraw the motion.

"We want full disclosure of anyone who is going to participate in a campaign in Texas, and that's what this bill is about," Merritt said.

The bill is about dead.
