TSA Decides Breast-Feeding Moms Who Travel With Breast Milk But No Infants Aren't Terrorist Threats

22 July 2007 at 12:22:05 PM

I don't think there's anyone that has seen Farenheit 9/11 with the scene of the mom being forced to taste her own breast milk will not be either appalled or ironically amused at this article of the TSA lifting ban on breast milk (oh, and lighters, too). Had no idea that women who breast fed were REQUIRED to have an infant with them if they wanted to bring breast milk, bottled, onto a plane. So that if you were a woman who travels on business and you went to the trouble of expressing your milk to feed your kid later on that day or whenever, and you got MORE THAN 3 OUNCES OF MILK OUT OF THE DEAL, you'd have to maybe borrow someone else's infant while you were waiting in line to get past those pesky TSA screeners.

The other rule change on Aug. 4 applies to mothers -- or anyone -- wanting to bring more than 3 ounces of breast milk onto an airplane. Under current rules, the passenger carrying that amount of milk must be accompanied by an infant, but the new rules drop that requirement. The liquid will still have to be declared to screeners who might request additional inspection.

"This rule has been a pain for working mothers who pumped breast milk while on a business trip without their child and wanted to carry more than three ounces home with them." said TSA spokeswoman Ellen Howe. "They had to throw larger amounts in the trash and that was not only wasteful but emotionally charged."

Yeah. To say the least! In WHAT WORLD was breast milk a terrorist threat or, more specifically, MORE THAN THREE OUNCES of breast milk? I can see it now, crazed woman whose breasts are a little full standing in the aisle of the plane holding up the little plastic container full of milk threatening the other passengers. With what? Getting them all milky? Or did TSA really believe that terrorists would pretend to have breast milk in large quantities to attack people on a plane?

Really, it's ridiculous. And it's ridiculous to even read that now the ban is lifted.

P.S. The article also says that the US was the ONLY country in the world that banned Bic lighters.
