NRCC Wastes No Time Trying to Trash Chet Edwards- Edwards Smacks Back

21 July 2007 at 8:40:07 AM

It's interesting, as Edwards notes, that this came out on the SAME DAY that the new NRCC Chairman, Tom Cole, attacked him in a press release.

Charges the National Republican Congressional Committee made recently that U.S. Rep. Chet Edwards, D-Waco, voted to allow illegal immigrants access to federal housing assistance and that he refuses to do anything about the problem of illegal immigration are false, Edwards said.

The NRCC release references the vote on the July 12 Section 8 Voucher Reform Act. The act increases the number of families receiving vouchers by 20,000 per year over the next five years by reforming the voucher-funding formula to increase eligibility.

That bill passed the House by a 333-83 margin with the majority of Democrats — including Edwards — and Republicans voting for it....

NRCC personnel charged Edwards with voting against the motion that makes significant progress in the battle for immigration reform and refusing to listen to his constituents despite 61 percent of Americans disapproving of the government’s recent efforts to deal with illegal immigration.

“This is a grave example of how Chet Edwards is voting lock step with Democratic leadership and out of step with his constituents,” said Jessica Boulanger, NRCC communications director. “The immigration issue is one of the most important issues to American people, and Edwards refuses to do anything about it.”

Ken Spain, a press secretary with the NRCC, agreed.

“We just point to the fact that Edwards opposed a bipartisan effort in a procedural vote prior to final passage that bars illegal immigrants from receiving tax-payer-funded benefits,” Spain said.

Edwards called such allegations false.

“This is surely politically motivated and the type of false, partisan attack voters are sick of,” Edwards said.

Capito’s motion neither mentions nor addresses illegal aliens and could act to deny housing to deserving U.S. citizens and working families, Edwards said.

“This amendment is ineffective,” Edwards said. “We know how easy it is for illegal immigrants to falsify Social Security cards and the government is trying to get away from Social Security cards because of identity-theft issues. This motion has nothing to do with illegal immigration and could deny housing to citizens. The Real ID system is not in place yet, and how many working class or poor families want to spend up to $100 to get passports?”

And let's consider Tom Cole's tactics as NRCC chair

"No matter how conservative your opponent is, call him a liberal.  You can never be perceived as too far right." -- Tom Cole

But, as we know in THIS district, Chet Edwards does NOT vote as a liberal. He has voted to gut habeus corpus, he is for the REAL ID act (which Dems in general are not), he votes for the Iraq War, voted for DOMA, voted for the bankruptcy law. etc.
