In this last Texas Lege session, Lon Burnam wanted to restrict the use of tasers to *only* when the police are justified in using deadly force against a suspect; HB 418 - Sid Miller said, amusingly, that he'd rather be shot with a shotgun than a taser, and as I wondered then, does he know this from some personal experience? At any rate, the bill died in committee, but in case it gets brought up again, I want to mention some Taser Stories In the News.
Is it okay to taser a guy who doesn't stop for a traffic stop?
Police used a Taser on a motorcyclist after police said he failed to stop for traffic stop in Carter Lake.
The driver crossed over into Omaha, eluding an Omaha officer, police said.
The motorcyclist stopped near Park and Ed Creighton avenues and hid from police under a wheelbarrow, officers said. When he refused to get up, an officer used a Taser.
75 Year old man shot with a taser after charging an officer
During the second visit, Bennefield became combative, Rodgers said.
“He became real aggressive, cussed the officer and told him he wouldn’t put his hogs up, and he wasn’t fixing his fence,” Rodgers said.
The hog was in the neighbor’s yard when the officers arrived. The hog then entered the road and became a road hazard, said Rodgers.
Chamberlain shot the hog.
According to police reports, an agitated Bennefield responded by charging one officer. He changed course and bore down on the other officer, Rodgers said.
“Chamberlain tried to get Mr. Bennefield to calm down and (tried to explain) the reason for shooting the hog,” said Rodgers, reading from Chamberlain’s report.
But Bennefield only became more incensed, cursing and clenching his fists, according to Chamberlain’s account.
Finally, Bennefield took a swing at Westmoreland, according to the report, and Chamberlain responded by using his Taser gun.
Court pays $37.500 in Taser case- man circling parking lot to calm his baby
A man who said he was circling an apartment parking lot to calm his fussy infant daughter -- not casing for a burglary -- got a $37,500 settlement from Franklin County yesterday. Deputies had arrested him in 2005 and shocked him with a Taser.
Charges against Shaun A. Bryant, 21, of the Southeast Side, were eventually dropped. Two deputies were disciplined for reporting and paperwork technicalities. An internal investigation by the Franklin County sheriff's office failed to substantiate the improper use of Tasers.
But the deal, approved by Franklin County commissioners, raises fresh issues around Taser use.
"I am more concerned in the aftermath about proper training on the use of Tasers so it's not an expanded use of force," Commissioner Mary Jo Kilroy said.
In May, a Valleyview man died three days after Franklin County deputies shocked him with a Taser and used pepper spray. An autopsy failed to reveal an obvious cause for the death of Patrick D. Hagans, 42.
Man in Pasadena, CA dies after being shocked, ONCE, by a taser
PASADENA - A man who died after a struggle with police officers last week was shocked only one time with a Taser, authorities said.
"Just once," said Cmdr. Eric Mills of the Pasadena Police Department. "One five-second burst."
Family members had said they were told Arcadia resident Richard Baisner, 36, had been shocked a second time after falling down.
Just after 3 p.m. July 3, officers responded to calls about a man, who turned out to be Baisner, wearing only a shirt who was injuring himself and scaring passers-by at Hill Avenue and Maple Street.
Woman Sues after Police Taser Her while She was trying to call 9/11.
Los Angeles, California (PRWEB) July 10, 2007 -- A 61-year-old Long Beach housewife has filed a lawsuit against Long Beach Police Chief Anthony W. Batts, Long Beach police officer Robert P. Curran and the City of Long Beach, after she was shot multiple times with a Taser weapon as she called 911. (Taneja v. City of Long Beach, et al, Case No. CV-07-4380 ER (MANx).)
According to the complaint, on November 10, 2006 at approximately 3:16 p.m., Kiran Taneja was in the backyard of her longtime residence speaking with a workman who was replacing screens on her home. A Long Beach police officer entered the yard with both of his hands on his Taser weapon shouting, "I'm going to shoot you, I'm going to shoot you."
When Ms Taneja dialed 911 to ask for assistance, she claims in the suit, the officer demanded she lie on the ground, even though several eyewitnesses report she presented no threat of harm to anyone around her. The Complaint alleges that, rather than allowing Ms. Taneja to speak with the 911 dispatcher, the officer repeatedly fired his Taser, striking her multiple times.
Tasered Burn Victim's Family Hires Attorney
An attorney hired to represent the family of Johnny F. Lopez — the San Angelo man who died from burn injuries he received after a San Angelo police officer used a Taser on him — is investigating the incident and might pursue a claim against the City of San Angelo.
