We were joking about a month or two ago that we wouldn't get a chance to get our rain barrel system in before the rains stopped. Now, it's more like we can't quite FINISH the rain barrel system because it keeps raining. I'm looking out the office window and watching the rain pour down from the sky. Earlier I heard the geese making a racket and saw 2 young black buzzards eyeing the two goslings-chased them off by throwing a rock towards them (you can't kill them in Texas, they're protected) while wondering why they were even out in this weather. I sure didn't see any adult black buzzards flying around.
On the rain barrel. The one we put on by the chicken house now entirely waters all the chickens and it's only getting 1/4 of the water coming off the roof. Once we put up a gutter and 3 additional barrels piped together, it ought to be enough water, next year, to supply for the entire summer. That will be the acid test. I think what's surprising to me is how MUCH water you can get from rainfall-it never seems like all that much when it's coming down or running off down into the street.
If it clears off a bit, I might go down to the Paluxy again or go look at the Brazos. I read last night that the BRA (Brazos River Authority) opened up the floodgates at Possum Kingdom Dam. That can't have done good for all the people living downstream by the Brazos.
P.S. The neighbor who sold me peaches yesterday told me he's mentioned in two of John Graves' books, Hardscrabble and Goodbye to a River. I read most of Goodbye to a River about 10 years ago, before I moved out here and didn't know at the time that I was moving to the town where the author lived. This looks like the kind of rainy day where it would be good to dig that book out and reread it.
