Mentioning this interesting story that shows that people with a will can alter career course because of its Glen Rose connection. Ralph Baine of Burleson's wife, Jennifer, works as a physician's assistant at a Glen Rose clinic, and encouraged him to go for a medical degree.

His wife, Jennifer, is a physician assistant at a clinic in Glen Rose, and it was at her urging that he finally pursued medical school. In 2001, she looked up all the requirements for him, put them in front of him and said, "You can do this."

He started taking prerequisite courses at TCC and the University of Texas at Arlington -- biochemistry, biology, physics, all science courses -- between shifts at the hospital.

"He would go to work at 5 a.m., work all day, come home for about an hour, go to class until 10 at night," his wife said. "He would come home, study and fall in bed around midnight or 1. Some nights the phone would ring and he'd have to go in at 3 or 4 o'clock. He exists on no sleep."

In the spring of 2003, Baine's first choice, UT Southwestern, accepted him into medical school -- without a bachelor's degree.
