Bush Obstinate and Close-Minded about Social Security

27 April 2005 at 1:48:20 PM

We read this yesterday, the day after Bush said he intends to extend his Social Security road show. Given that the sale of private accounts isn't working, would Bush be open to any other deals on the table, as he so often claims? Not according to Charles Rangel, quoted in the NY Times

[Sen Ron Wyden] Asked in an interview after the hearing to explain what he meant, the senator said, "To make progress, the White House must make clear that no private accounts will be involved."

At least for now, Mr. Bush seems unlikely to make such a commitment.

Representative Charles B. Rangel of New York, the senior Democrat on the House Ways and Means Committee, said he met with the president last week and urged him to take private accounts off the table so the two parties could work on solvency.

Mr. Rangel said Mr. Bush replied: "Congressman, I am the president. And private accounts are not coming off the table even if it's the last day I spend in the presidency."

Inflexible and irresponsible. Bush has no plan for social security except to gut it, convert people from "insurance" to "gambling", and create a huge deficit in the costs of implementing this boondoggle. The statement, above, also shows the size of his ego; a president is supposed to listen to the public whom he serves-it's intractible for him to infer that he can do anything he wants simply because he is the president. And it also shows that he is concerned more about getting his own way than about ensuring that people's golden ages are protected.
