Perry Appoints Yet Another Special Interest Cohort
Brian Newby has been appointed by the governor to be his next Chief of Staff. It's only fitting because the governor always appoints his special interest cohorts to high salary position that taxpayers have to foot the bill for. Mr. Newby is another one of those Texas Tech University Board of Regents affiliates Perry cares so much for.
During his 5-year reign Perry has done everything he can to provide additional revenue to UT and other higher education institutions. Despite the fact that a large part of the gasoline tax (which was supposed to pay only for the building and maintenance of our roadways) goes to higher education, the governor pressured the legislature to push through a bill to deregulate higher education tuition. In fact, that bill was so important to Perry that he traveled throughout the state campaigning for it. When did the governor ever campaign to decrease our property taxes or to cut the astronomical cost of home insurance?
Since the deregulation of tuition, UT has increased tuition at least 3 times and other universities and colleges have followed suit. Consequently, the cost of a Texas university degree is unaffordable to most Texas children and their families. Perhaps since so few Texas children can pay the tuition, we should rename the college UW, as in University of Wealth?
The fact that Perry "won" reelection with only 39-percent of the votes should highlight the need for a new governor.
