Perry signs Transportation bill SB 792 --- there goes the neighborhood!

11 June 2007 at 5:10:51 PM

Texans and generations of our children's children are doomed to pay for toll roads currently being planned and the TTC-35, a.k.a., the Trans-Texas Corridor.

No matter what legislators and/or advocacy / anti-toll groups tell us, toll roads have become a way of life for all of us thanks to the signing of SB 792.  Anyone who believes differently is a sellout or just plain ignorant of what the bill really states.
But, hey!  Don't believe me.  Read the bill for yourself and see what you think of it and also read what Ben Wear writes below about SB 792

Perry signs transportation bill

Gov. Rick Perry this afternoon signed SB 792, the main transportation bill of the just-ended session. The legislation contains a moratorium on private toll road contracts for at least the next two years, but that “freeze” contains a dozen exceptions and likely will not stop most of the projects that were on the cusp. However, it also gives local toll road agencies such as the Central Texas Regional Mobility Authority first shot at building tollways. Perry had vetoed an earlier version of the bill, carried as HB 1892, that he felt would effectively end all such contracts with private companies. His staff participated in final talks that resulted in SB 792. “I am proud to sign this legislation because it will help Texas build the roads we need to manage our state’s tremendous population growth,” Perry said. “Under this legislation, every planned road construction project will move forward as scheduled, local leaders will have more authority to build new toll roads and all toll revenue will be used for transportation projects in the area it was raised.”
