Caught A Raccoon! And Video of Duckling Egg Hatching

Yesterday, when I went out to take the dogs to the vet, I saw that one of the ducks had been torn apart and was laying by the fence.... and judging from the body, it hadn't happened too long before. I found the duck because two huge black buzzards were in the yard... etc. I removed the body and went on with what was a pretty busy day, which included getting some lumber to make an annex on the duck house. While unloading the lumber from the pickup, I thought I heard some ducklings peep. I walked around but didn't hear anything. Went BACK to the truck and heard it again.

The duck had been sitting on some eggs she had laid in the middle of a sawed off cedar (juniper) tree.

I found 2 ducklings and moved them to a box in the garage. I noticed that one of the eggs had a crack in it and I could hear tapping. So I grabbed the camera and recorded another duckling hatching out. VIDEO HERE on CANOFUN.

All three are safely in the box in the garage now, and I put the remaining eggs in the box, in case any might hatch.

We put out a live trap last night to catch what we believed to be a raccoon that has been killing the poultry, including the mama duck from yesterday. The trap was baited with apple and it's one of the humane traps where, when the animal walks to the back of the cage to get the food, it steps on a metal piece that pulls off a catch that then causes the front door to close.

This morning, I went out and looked, first thing, and there was something in the cage! I was hoping it wasn't one of the cats living around here, but nope, it was a raccoon, I'm sure THE raccoon, that has been killing the ducks and chickens.

NOT happy

I don't know what we're going to do with the raccoon. I favor turning it into a hat, but we sure can't let it go, as raccoons are quite vicious about killing the birds.

UPDATE: We took it a long way away and let it out in some thick woods, alive and well.
