John Edwards-Does He Support Militarism, Too? Does He Want to Bring Back the Draft?

Saw this article yesterday which, in part, has to do with a call to speak up against the Iraq War on Memorial Day. That, naturally, doesn't sit too well with the American Legion. But what got my attention was his call to national service.

"One of the things we ought to be thinking about is some level of mandatory service to our country, so that everybody in America — not just the poor kids who get sent to war — are serving this country," he said.

After the event, Edwards said he had not meant to imply that only the poor go to war, only that everyone should serve in some way.

"We have people from all walks of life in America who are serving, including Reservists and National Guard," he said. "What we want to do is to have all Americans to have a chance to serve their country."

What does he MEAN by this? In the military? And if not, and people could pick and choose how they want to serve their country, would there be a disparity between, say, the people who want to volunteer at a VA hospital and those who served in combat? Would the Soldiers of Forture contractors who are paid by companies like Blackwater also be serving their country? Would service include women? What if you want to do service ala Peace Corps type missions?

I continue to believe that the debate must FIRST be whether America should be, first and foremost, a military nation rather than a democracy. Seems to me that Service For All makes no sense as long as America uses the military for empire-building.

I've already knocked Clinton and Obama off my list of people to vote for due to their militarism stance. And, while I thought I might be able to *hold my nose* and vote for them anyway, I simply cannot, for reasons of conscience. And it looks like I'll have to add Edwards to that list.
