Hmm. Saw the other day an article about The Perryman Group study on the Barnett Shale and questioned why these types of studies are not called out for what they are: paid PR studies by clients. Saw a little bit more this morning that *shows* the chain of events.

The Fort Worth Chamber of Commerce hired The Perryman Group to help them pitch how great it is to do drilling in the area.

David Berzina, executive vice president of the Fort Worth Chamber of Commerce, said the idea for an expo began after the chamber hired economist Ray Perryman to conduct a study on the gas field’s economic effects.

The study was intended to give elected officials, the media and school districts an idea of the revenue stream the field is creating, Berzina said.

Already you can see it's a PR effort. But especially so with the help of those who have a vested interest in drilling.

While Perryman was conducting his study, drilling companies began talking about getting information to the public, Berzina said. Everyone eventually came together and decided to put on an expo.

Of course. Use an event with lots of trade show booths to sell. Then, before the event, send out a PR release about the show.

The study, commissioned by the Fort Worth Chamber of Commerce, was unveiled at the Barnett Shale Expo at the Fort Worth Convention Center. The one-day exhibition included presentations on mineral rights, water use and natural gas pipelines, and attracted several thousand people.

I'm probably naive about "studies" and maybe a whole lot of them are done by business or commercial interests to assist in promoting particular viewpoints. (I used to believe that studies were done by neutral, disinterested scientists or parties who wanted to promote *facts*.) And, you know, we're assaulted by commercials attempting to sell us stuff at every level-my point is that this is more of it.

P.S. While I was writing this, McBlogger was also taking note of the fact that The Perryman Group seems to shill for anyone.
