Gas Plumes in the Sky- Maypearl and Fort Worth, Texas -Don't You Just LOVE Gas Fires and Explosions?

Down in Maypearl, Texas, Saturday brought a bunch of accidents at a gas processing plant which required local residents to be evacuated.

The fire completely involved one structure at the plant, and both Atmos Energy and Energy Transfer have operations at the plant, an employee said.

Before the fire burnt itself out, a pop-off valve blew, releasing a column of natural gas into the atmosphere and sounding “like a dozen jet engines,” according to one witness.

The plume could be seen for a number of miles, and the sound of gas escaping could be heard from about one mile away at the roadblocks, which were re-established after the valve blew.
And then, today, in Fort Worth

A pillar of fire more than 100 feet high erupted early Monday at an electric power plant, towering over a major interstate for about 20 minutes before abruptly going out.

Texas Department of Transportation cameras on nearby Interstate 820 showed the flare at the Exelon Corp. Handley plant, which disrupted traffic after it started at about 7:10 a.m.

The flare happened when a relief valve tripped on a 24-inch natural gas transmission line that feeds the gas-fired power plant, said Lt. Kent Worley, a Fort Worth fire spokesman. Worley said spark ignited the gas plume, and state and local officials will now investigate where the spark came from, he said.

And, oh, I love this!

The relief valve is located near high-voltage lines and a transformer station on the power plant property.
