Wah! Sandy Kress Unhappy that Texas Might Get Rid of TAKS Test

13 April 2007 at 11:41:40 AM

Had to laugh when I read this article in the Waxahachie paper, which basically discusses how end-of-year tests will replace these horrendous general TAKS tests that want to see, over cumulative high school years, what students have learned. Here you have teachers and administrators that are all for this, but WHO do they pick to do the whining about getting rid of it? Sandy Kress.

Which Sandy Kress? Oh, yeah, the one that worked for Bush, helped DESIGN the original NCLB and has made beaucoup bucks from shoveling it to legislators. I guess he would NOT like to see this go away, eh? heh.

But at least one expert expressed caution on how the plan is implemented.

“This is a lot more complicated than getting rid of the mean ol’ nasty TAKS test and going to the more sensible end-of-course exam,” said Sandy Kress, an Austin-based education consultant who advised Bush on No Child Left Behind.

The new system would complicate how schools as a whole are assessed, Kress said, and how the state can move toward measuring students’ growth, since comparing performance on a general math test is easier than comparing how a student did on Algebra 2 versus geometry.
“It’s a good idea,” Kress said, but “the work doesn’t end with passing the bill, it just begins.”
Yeah, look out because Kress would like to take a hatchet to this one. He has a Pinkies-Up Lifestyle to Maintain.
And, um, wouldn't it be nice to see an OPPOSING view to modifying NCLB that was from, say, a PARENT or an EDUCATOR instead of someone profiting off it?
