President Bush Visits Parks with Dirty Air, Backs Energy Bill to Prolong Dirty Air (the same energy bill that passed yesterday and included dirty air and dirty water provisions while providing pork for corporations).

WASHINGTON, April 22 /U.S. Newswire/ -– The non-profit Clean Air Watch today noted that President Bush is visiting a national park with dirty air even as his administration backs a dirty-air provision of the energy legislation approved yesterday by the House of Representatives.

The President is visiting the Great Smoky Mountains National Park in Tennessee as part of an Earth Day photo event.

Frank O'Donnell, president of Clean Air Watch, noted that EPA reported on three days this week -– April 17 to 19 -– that the park had smog levels that were "unhealthy for sensitive groups." EPA warned on those days that "active children and adults, and people with respiratory diseases, such as asthma, should limit prolonged outdoor exposure."

Today, EPA forecasts the smog in the park will be "moderate," meaning that "unusually sensitive people should consider limiting outdoor exposure."

"President Bush said he wanted to get his hands dirty on Earth Day, but what about his lungs?" asked O'Donnell.

O'Donnell noted that the Bush administration is backing a provision in the House-passed energy bill that would weaken the Clean Air Act and postpone smog cleanup in much of the country. The legislation would delay cleanup requirements in parts of the country affected by pollution from other areas -– and that could include areas from Texas to the East Coast, including Tennessee.

The dirty-air provision was backed by coal-burning power companies and other big polluters. It would not reduce American dependence on foreign oil by a single drop.

"It's remarkable that on Earth Day, the President would actually be backing a plan that would prolong dirty air," added O'Donnell.
