ALA's Carol Brey-Casiano will be holding a news conference on Monday.

The American Library Association (ALA) opposes any use of governmental power to suppress the free and open exchange of knowledge or to intimidate individuals exercising free inquiry. The ALA considers sections of the USA PATRIOT Act to be a present danger to the constitutional rights and privacy rights of library users.

In a statement following Senate Judiciary Committee hearings on the PATRIOT Act, Carol Brey-Casiano said, "States created library confidentiality laws to protect the First Amendment right to read and inquire without government interference, a freedom Americans hold dear. Libraries provide the forum for the exercise of this freedom, assuring each person that there is a place for free and open inquiry without the government peering over one's shoulder."
