Trans Texas Corridor- Lt Gov Dewhurst Tells Carona To get Moratorium Bill Out of Committee

1 April 2007 at 9:45:16 AM

Amazing article with article subtext "Legislators Worry Contracts Are Sending Profits Out of State".

Oh. NOW they're worried? Where were all these glad-handing fools when they snuck the legislation down in the form of an obscurely worded res at voting time? No. Now they're worried about keeping their jobs because people are OUTRAGED.  Carona and Krusee are still all for this boondoggle, though (Remember this at election time). They way they're both shilling for it, You Would Think They Were Both Getting Kickbacks!

"Once we tell the capital market that Texas is closed for two years, will they ever want to come back? Because it's very expensive to make proposals," he said. "The capital market looks for willing partners and if Texas is not a willing partner, they leave."

As I said yesterday, they also SNUCK in signing the first private toll road contract THE DAY AFTER the Senate held a hearing on the moratorium bill. The DAY AFTER.

At least Nichols, so far, is pushing the moratorium and expects the bill to pass.

"We need to call a time-out. We need to fix this problem, and we need to fix it right," Nichols said. "The current plan removes the control of your future transportation system out of your own hands. It sells the future revenues at a discount, and it's designed to extract exorbitant toll rates."

Dewhurst called those rates "astronomical" but declined to discuss them because of confidentiality agreements with the private companies.

Decisions about the state's future highway system will be dictated by corporations instead of Texans unless lawmakers intervene now, Nichols said.

One more point about money. It's been trumpeted as a point in favor of having Cintra (or some other foreign investor) run toll roads in our state that Cintra Will Give Texas 25 Million in Up-Front Cash and a share of the profits (in reference to 130). But

...Kolkhorst said it's costing Texas $19 million in environmental and legal fees to get the $25 million, "so we're really not even going to net anything on that one

And, remember that, in the case of 121, NTTA was told not to bid on it.(Video on CanOFun)

The North Texas Tollway Authority, which had agreed not to bid on the project, said it could have matched Cintra's upfront carrot of $2.1 billion and that for the rest of the 50-year contract they could have paid $4.2 billion compared to Cintra's $700 million.

Motorists will pay the $3.5 billion difference if the deal is signed, officials say.
