How Much Pollution Does an IGCC Coal Plant Put out? NRG's Could Increase Greenhouse Gasses by 50-60 Percent

Again, IGCC is the same technology that the TXU buyout  mega-corp is pushing, telling people it is clean. (And that includes Environmental Defense, too). So, why, then, last week, did the NRG try to sue to prevent Delaware's public utilities from telling the public what the emissions would be? Today, I see that the stats have been released and they ARE NOT GOOD.

A power plant proposed for the Millsboro area could increase Delaware's statewide greenhouse-gas output by 50 to 60 percent or more at a time of rising global pressure for cutbacks, according to newly released details about the project.

But how do they intend to deal with all this gas? Inject it into the ground. Oh, yeah, now THAT's a good idea.

The NRG Energy disclosures about its next-generation coal plant are expected to focus more attention on coal plant emissions and company plans to inject a majority of the waste carbon dioxide deep beneath Millsboro -- an option based on untested assumptions about Delaware geology and undetermined rules for "sequestering" the waste gas in deep, local wells.

"There's no hiding the fact that, unsequestered, the NRG proposal will significantly increase CO2 emissions," said Philip Cherry, a Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control policy manager and member of a team now considering power plant bids by NRG, Conectiv and Bluewater Wind LLC...

Studies in Europe have shown carbon dioxide can spread for dozens of square miles around an injection well over a period of decades and centuries. NRG's own proposal notes potential risk from surface leaks of the gas.

"I don't want to live on top of a CO2 bubble," said Joan Deaver, president of Citizens for a Better Sussex, one of the groups opposing the coal plant.

NRG blacked out distance estimates in a computer simulation of underground gas dispersal in a proposed well field under the Indian River plant near Millsboro. But a count of undefined "blocks" in public versions of the document indicate that the near-liquid gas would expand across an area 25 times larger than the original injection site after 30 years.
