TxDOT Provides Shoddy Roadwork

TxDOT requires oversight and regulation

Communities, e.g., Driftwood in Hays County, are complaining about the shoddy roadwork done by TxDOT.  Five months ago TxDOT "resealed" most of FM 1826 and since that time the complaints have been rolling in.  The main complaints are that the road material at most (if not all) intersections has been "smeared" by large, heavy vehicles, that the road is more rough and vehicles vibrate driving down the little country road, and noise pollution has increased 80-percent --- so loud that folks say they can't even hear their own car radios when driving on it.  In addition, the shoulder drop-off danger has worsened because the "reseal" raised the height of the roadway without allowing for a more gradual slope when a vehicle needs to pull off the road and unto its shoulders and so there is a greater potential for a fatality.

What does TxDOT say about it?  The agency's representatives from Area Engineer Don Nyland on up to top management Exec. Dir. Mike Behrens say TxDOT has done nothing wrong, that it has purchased and used cheaper materials due to the agency not having enough tax dollars to spend more on higher quality materials.  Despite the ongoing complaints from residents TxDOT says it has no plans to perform repairs on the road any time soon.

Many in the community believe that TxDOT cuts back on using quality materials because it wants to make a point to the state legislature and taxpayers.  That point is that the agency needs more tax dollars to build and maintain higher quality roads.  Citizens believe that it may be a TxDOT plan to persuade everyone that toll roads are needed all over the state to raise road revenues.

In either case, you don't have to be Einstein when driving on roads like FM 1826 to see that there are real issues and problems that need resolution.

Up until now, TxDOT remains firm in its position NOT to do any repairs.  Elected officials, Senator Jeff Wentworth and Rep. Patrick Rose so far have been unable to assist their constituents with this road issue.  Residents in Hays County are preparing to raise their fight with TxDOT up a few notches.  They now are planning to seek help from the legal sector.

Interestingly enough, despite community outrage, TxDOT is hoping to secure a partnership with Hays County via a road bond package they hope residents will vote for on May 12th.
