Outsourcing News O Day- Brand Loyalty When the Product is Made on the Cheap in Another Country

25 March 2007 at 1:31:52 PM

I was reading a bit ago an article about Indian outsourcing and it got me to thinking about how many companies are doing this now, and then I saw Hershey's. I Hurt! Hershey's is one of those that has cut their workforce, outsourced some of its production and built a factory in Mexico (Hey! Yet Another Reason so many Fat Cat Corporations want that dang Trans Texas Corridor/NAFTA Superhighway that cuts our country in half-have to get these goods that we THOUGHT were manufactured here from Mexico, eh?)

Anyway, not so much about outsourcing but there's this comment about brand loyalty in the article.

Hershey's plans to increase advertising and promotion of its treats, instead of just relying on brand recognition of the Hershey chocolate bar, which was launched more than 100 years ago.

"This is a company with a very strong brand," said Stanford C. Bernstein & Co. analyst Alexia Howard.

"Ultimately, you do need that to keep the brand in people's minds and keep building the loyalty to that brand," Howard said.

Yes. Brand Loyalty. I should be loyal to a brand that isn't loyal to the Pennsylvania Americans who were working for them... because it wasn't enough profit for the shareholders.

P.S. While I'm at it, on a related note, someone altered me to a post about American Girl dolls-the situation is an ugly one, but the idea as it relates to the subject above

American Girl dolls are now made in China, and tagged as such.

Irony, much?
