Susan Combs Continues her Fat-Tax Crusade in Which TaxPayers Would Pay for Obesity

25 March 2007 at 12:20:57 PM

Somehow when this woman was running for Comptroller, I was paying more attention to her lurid romance novels than her crusade against the overweight. But, you know, She's Just Looking Out for Business Interests.

Obese workers in 2005 cost Texas employers an estimated $3.3 billion in healthcare costs, absenteeism and other expenses because of their weight, according to a state report released Friday.

The financial burden for businesses could reach $15.8 billion by 2025 if the nearly two-thirds of overweight or obese Texans don't get into shape, Texas Comptroller Susan Combs said in her report.

I'm guessing if I was to look at her campaign contributors I'd see a lot of insurance interests, waddya think? On her report-she based her report on 30 companies, which are only 1/5 of the number that were asked. I'd like to know exactly which companies they were, maybe that's in the report.

I don't have a problem with her being against childhood obesity. I think the junk food vending machines and deals that schools make with junk food companies in other ways are a scam. And I also know that in a number of schools, kids don't even have recess anymore. Seems to me that more activity with less chances to buy Snickers in the vending machine would be good.

But this report looks at obesity in adults, and not just ANY adults but WORKERS. And look at this.

A spokesman for the comptroller's office said there are no immediate plans to conduct a similar survey of state agencies, which would rely on taxpayer dollars to shoulder the costs of lost productivity and medical bills caused by obese workers.

Oh. No IMMEDIATE plans. But maybe some in the future where WE would get to help pay these costs for the obese?

I don't have a good answer for rising costs due to people overeating. But I definitely don't think Susan Combs needs to be the one making a determination that Texas taxpayers pick up the slack.
