Injection Wells Safe? NO! Texas RailRoad Commission Shuts Down Hydro-Fx's Near Boyd (Wise Co )Tx

I had read in the Weatherford paper the other day that the RRC might have Actually Shut Down A Well, in Wise County. After I picked my jaw up off the floor, I thought I'd do some hunting on where that might have been. Found this article from last Sunday that says the well is in Boyd, which is east of Springtown. The sequence of events was that, despite the group Concerned Citizens of Wise County (from Boyd) told the RRC in their protest hearing originally that the well was not safe.

“During testimony we provided during our protest of the application for this well near Boyd, we clearly demonstrated that the sub strata in this part of Wise County was not suitable for the disposal of oil and gas waste materials and would in fact threaten our fresh water source,” Joling said in a written statement. “The discovery of increased pressures in the casings of nearby gas wells demonstrates the danger of the injected waste materials moving up towards the fresh water tables. The fact that the pressures in these casings dropped as soon as the Hydro-FX disposal well was shut down by the Railroad Commission makes it pretty clear that this well should not be allowed to reopen.”

The RRC being the rubber stamp agency that caters to O&G that they are, they went ahead and okayed the permit for Hydro-FX. UNTIL Devon Energy noticed "four nearby offset gas wells detected an increase in bradenhead pressure in their wells" and reported it to the RRC.

Investigators with the Railroad Commission inspected the injection well, located about four miles west of Boyd, on Jan. 17 and confirmed the elevated bradenhead pressure.

“On Jan. 22, RRC ordered Hydro-FX to immediately cease operations. A follow-up RRC inspection confirmed the bradenhead pressure on Devon’s wells began to decline after Hydro-FX ceased operations,” Nye said in an e-mail.

She said Hydro-FX’s injection well permit “is subject to cancellation,” although the company has requested a hearing to show why it should be allowed to continue operating the well. No date has been set for that hearing.
