NRC Says PFFFTTT!!! to Most Nuclear Power Plants About Terrorist Attacks - It Matters Where You Live If They Will Pay Attention to YOU

and apparently that doesn't include Comanche Peak.  Here's the deal. You have spent fuel rods that you have to put somewhere. And they're radioactive. Where do you put them? The US Supreme Court says that WHERE you put those rods needs to be part of the debate about what would happen in case of a terrorist attack. But the NRC (Nuclear Regulatory Commission) says Nix on That! Because the Supreme Court refused to hear a case from an appeals court that involved ONE nuclear power plant, Exelon's Limerick Generating Station that requires Limerick to take that into consideration, the NRC says, That Only Applies to That ONE nuclear power plant, we don't have to do it for any others. Makes you feel all warm and fuzzy, doesn't it!

Refusing to hear an appeal, the Supreme Court on Jan. 16 left intact a ruling by the federal Ninth Circuit Appeals Court in San Francisco that the NRC must consider the damage a terrorist attack on the proposed Diablo Canyon spent fuel facility would cause as part of its environmental review. The NRC has taken the position that the decision applies only to that plant in that state, Sheehan confirmed.

Dry cask storage is a method for storing nuclear fuel that while still radioactive is no longer useful as fuel for the reactor. Stored for years in a pool while it cools, the older fuel will be moved to steel canisters, encased in concrete and set on a concrete pad outside the reactor building under the Exelon plan approved last July by the Limerick Board of Supervisors.

According to a Feb. 26 memo, the NRC instructed its staff to prepare a terrorism review for California’s Diablo Canyon plant under the National Environmental Policy Act, something the San Luis Obispo Mothers for Peace pursued in the federal lawsuit they filed against the plant’s owner, Pacific Gas & Electric. No policy was issued for similar projects in other parts of the country -- Limerick being among them -- and the NRC made it clear none should be expected.

The article points out that it's pretty discouraging AND expensive to push a case through the court system, and actually that's what would have to be done, for the NRC to consider that making plans for terrorist attacks applies to ALL nuclear power plants. And they are thumbing their nose at the Department of Energy, which also, according to the article, believes that the same standards should be applied to all.

Asking again why it is that people tout nuclear power as being the end ll and be all, especially when the agency that has oversight FOR OUR SAFETY doesn't really believe in it?
