Chet Edwards -Bill Passed That Authorizes 1 Million Dollars to Research Water-Recycling Plants

HR 902- Specifically about the gas and oil industry. Can't decide how I feel about this one. On the one hand, it's really good to see that there is some attempts to get O&G to recycle water; but why push this off into the future (Devon Energy is using Fountain Quail NOW to recycle water) and why, when O&G is making record profits, should taxpayers be subsidizing their efforts through corporate welfare? On the other hand, it's a step towards Making O&G be Responsible.

A bill that would authorize $1 million to pay for a water-recycling pilot project for North Central Texas natural gas operations won House approval Monday.

U.S. Rep. Chet Edwards, D-Waco is an original co-sponsor of the More Water and More Energy Act, which would research how to recycle water used in natural gas and oil production.

“Recycling water used in drilling of natural gas wells will help preserve the long-term water supply for North Central Texas families and businesses,” Edwards said. “At the same time, it will allow the further development of gas wells in the Barnett Shale.”

Edwards worked with U.S. Rep. Mark Udall, D-Colo., the bill’s author, to add language to include a pilot project for Texas so that industry working in the Barnett Shale could apply for a $1 million grant from the Department of the Interior. Specifically, the bill authorizes $5 million in federal grants to assist in developing five pilot plants in Texas, Colorado, California and Arizona or Nevada. The projects will demonstrate how oil and gas operators can recover produced water and make it suitable for reuse.
