Texas TXDOT Needs Proper Oversight- All Road Bond Proposals Should be Placed on Hold

6 March 2007 at 5:27:11 PM

from Peter Stern of Dripping Springs

Many local areas are experiencing increased residential population and road usage and in the natural order of events road bond issues materialize to resolve the issue.
Several counties, e.g., Hays County, currently are considering road bond proposals that inevitably would increase property taxes for residents in order to enable the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) to begin work more quickly to build and/or maintain specific county roads, to be determined (TBD).
Now that the Texas Legislature finally, due to public pressure, is reviewing TxDOT's virtually limitless power and lack of oversight with possible plans to restructure and/or place more guidelines on the agency, counties should resist and postpone initiating any road bond proposals until after completion of the 80 Legislative Session.
To encourage any bond issues prior to this would be sheer folly and would put county taxpayers at-risk of haphazard road work and/or a double-taxation on roads that already may have been funded by local residents.
Unfortunately, various commissioners may have personal interests and/or objectives other than the community good.  If that's the case, the community must apply some pressure on their local officials to ensure that the interests of county commissioners is in line with those of the communities they represent.
