*Pat Me On the Head*- Toll Road Meeting for 121 in Collin County, Texas Next Monday

23 February 2007 at 9:46:09 AM

Why would TxDOT bother to have meetings in which the citizens can comment about 121 being a toll road all the way to 75 (Central Expressway)? It must be only so that the citizens can let off steam, powerlessly, so that the rabble won't pick up pitchforks and run the government out of town for deciding to charge them for driving on what USED to be a public road.  I mean, you read articles like this that reinforce the trend of Texas (and the nation) to make people pay to drive and also profit from leasing out OUR ROADS to private consortiums, and this sticks out.

Collin County residents will have another chance next week to voice their opinions about the proposed State Highway 121 toll road.

The Texas Department of Transportation will hold a public hearing Monday to present the specifics of the tolling plan for Highway 121 in Collin County. The meeting will be at Legacy Church, 4501 Legacy Drive, in Plano. .....

"We will present the project to the citizens and give them the opportunity to comment," said Transportation Department spokeswoman Angela Loston.

Although the public will be asked for opinions, the fate of Highway 121 as a toll road essentially was determined last year. Collin County and the four cities along Highway 121 held a series of public hearings on the merits of converting the freeway to a toll road.

The hearing also comes a day before state and regional leaders are expected to announce the winning bid from a private consortium to operate Highway 121 as a toll road in Denton County and in Collin County west of Central Expressway.

I don't know which is more annoying. That our roads are becoming toll roads and I doubt that most people even WANT to see that happen.. or that these exercises in futility are being held by TxDot to pacify the public into expressing opinions that they know aren't worth a warm bucket o spit.
